Today is the first day of school here in our neck of the woods, and even though it’s been a long time since I darkened the doorway of a classroom (much to the relief of my former teachers), I still love the back-to-school excitement and chance for another fresh start. My most recent blog post offers not only throwback BTS pics like the one here, but some thoughts on the way Virgo season inspires us all like a blank sheet of paper and perfectly organized, multi-colored pens.

Smells Like Tween Spirit

Under The Influencers

As the mom of a tween, I am fully aware of how desperately uncool I am. Recently, I was diagnosed with a significant β€œrizz” deficiency. As happens in these cases, the nature of my affliction put added pressure on back-to-school clothes shopping for my now 4th grader, lest my general existence at Target cause her debilitating embarrassment. The good news? TikTok is filled with teen influencers who can help an β€œold” like me become significantly more (or less) β€œskibidi” via OOTD videos and style hauls.

As a marketer, I am interested in how these young kids are able to become powerhouse brand ambassadors, monetizing their very existence and earning more than enough money to pay off college before they’re even out of high school. As a mom, I’m likeβ€”what the sigma?

In a recent profile on 17-year old influencer Demetra Dias, The Wall Street Journal Magazine explored the knack these kids have for advertising, but also what goes into it: the loss of privacy, the hours of engagement with followers, the endless, obsessive hustle to create new content, and the challenge to make it look simple.
